How root canal treatment works

Treatment is commonly completed over two appointments, but the exact sequence depends on the tooth, infection and clinical findings.

Step 01

Assess and make the tooth comfortable

We diagnose the source of symptoms, use local anaesthetic and isolate the tooth before accessing the canal system.

Step 02

Clean and disinfect the canals

Inflamed or infected tissue is removed. The canals are shaped, disinfected and may receive medication between visits.

Step 03

Seal and protect the tooth

Will root canal treatment hurt?

Root canal treatment is performed with local anaesthetic. Many patients find the appointment more manageable than expected because the infection or inflammation is often the reason the tooth hurts before treatment.

We explain each step, check comfort throughout the appointment and work at a calm pace. Some tenderness can occur afterwards while the surrounding tissues settle.

How do I know whether I need root canal treatment?

Can antibiotics cure a root canal infection?

How many visits does root canal treatment take?

Many cases need two appointments. Some teeth require a different number because of infection, anatomy, symptoms, medication between visits or referral needs.

Will I need a crown after root canal treatment?
