What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
- Knocked-out (avulsed) tooth — needs rapid care for the best chance of saving it
- Severe toothache or sensitivity that keeps you awake
- Facial swelling, gum abscess or spreading infection
- Broken/chipped tooth, lost filling or lost crown/veneer
- Dental trauma from sport or accidents
- Persistent bleeding after injury or extraction

First-Aid: What To Do Right Now
Knocked-Out Adult Tooth (Avulsion)
- Hold the tooth by the crown (top), not the root.
- If dirty, briefly rinse with milk or saline. Do not scrub.
- If possible, gently re-insert and bite on gauze.
- If you can’t re-insert, keep it in cold milk or inside the cheek (if conscious and safe).
- Come in immediately — time is critical.
Broken Tooth / Lost Filling or Crown
- Rinse gently; keep any fragments.
- Cover sharp edges with orthodontic wax or sugar-free gum.
- For a lost crown, you can use temporary dental cement from the pharmacy to place it back until your visit.
- Avoid hard/chewy foods on that side.
Severe Toothache / Infection
- Use cold compresses for swelling.
- Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed (avoid placing aspirin on the gum).
- Rinse with warm salt water.
- If you have fever, spreading swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing — see “Go to Hospital” below.
Soft Tissue Injuries
- Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze for 10–15 minutes.
- Cold compress outside the mouth to limit swelling.
- If bleeding won’t stop or the wound is deep, head to hospital.
When to Go Straight to Hospital
- Rapidly spreading facial swelling or fever
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Uncontrolled bleeding after injury/extraction
- Significant facial trauma or suspected jaw fracture
