The depth matters
A chip. A crack.
A different decision.
The visible size of the break does not tell the whole story. The dentist checks how much sound tooth remains and whether the nerve or root is involved.
A small chip
A piece of enamel has come away. Smoothing, bonding or a filling may be possible after the tooth and bite are checked.
A crack
The tooth may look intact but hurt when biting or releasing. The location and depth of the crack help determine whether it can be protected.
A deeper break
A larger fracture may involve the nerve, root or an existing filling. More protective treatment or removal may need to be discussed.

Your assessment in East Brisbane
Assess the damage.
Understand your options.
We look beyond the broken edge, including the remaining foundation, bite forces and nerve health. Saving the tooth is not always possible.

Check the tooth and bite
We examine the break, surrounding gum and existing restorations, checking for movement and nerve involvement.
Discuss suitable repair
Options may include smoothing, a bonded repair or filling, or a crown for broader protection.
Plan further care if needed
Root canal treatment may be considered when the nerve is affected. Removal may be discussed if the tooth cannot be predictably restored.

Can you fix a chipped front tooth today, and what would I pay?
If a small chip on your front tooth can be repaired with a straightforward filling, the total is $400-$600. That includes your examination, one X-ray and the filling. If the tooth needs a different repair, we’ll explain the options and costs before you decide. If the damage is clear of the nerve and there’s time, we can often repair it at that visit. A deeper chip may need monitoring. If pain develops, we test the nerve before deciding whether root canal treatment is needed.
Additional imaging and treatment are discussed and quoted before you proceed.Treatment at the same visit depends on clinical needs, available time and your consent.

Broken tooth questions, without the long detour.
What if a sharp edge is cutting my tongue?+
Avoid testing it with your tongue and do not file or glue the tooth. Choose softer foods and call for advice. A deep break with a visible pink centre, significant pain or ongoing bleeding needs immediate dental assessment.
Is a broken tooth urgent if it does not hurt?+
A painless break should still be assessed. A crack or weakened area may worsen under chewing pressure. Call promptly for a large break, a loose tooth, a sharp edge injuring the mouth or damage after an impact.
Why does a cracked tooth hurt when I bite or release?+
Parts of a cracked tooth can move under pressure and irritate the tissues. This symptom is useful information, but does not establish how deep the crack is. Examination and appropriate tests guide the decision.
Can a badly broken tooth still be saved?+
Sometimes. It depends on the fracture depth, remaining tooth structure, root and supporting tissues, and nerve health. A filling, crown or root canal may be suitable; an unrestorable tooth may need removal.
How much does broken-tooth repair cost?+
The emergency assessment is $150 including one dental X-ray. Repair is separate and depends on whether a filling, crown, root canal or another treatment is needed. We explain and quote suitable options before you decide. See the chipped front tooth repair example.
Can the repair be done at the first visit?+
Treatment may be possible after assessment when clinically appropriate and with your consent. The damage, required procedure and available time determine what can be done at that visit.
