What is tooth decay

Tooth decay - also called dental caries - happens when bacteria in plaque turn sugars into acids that dissolve tooth minerals. Early decay can be reversed with fluoride and diet changes. Deeper decay needs treatment to stop pain and infection.

Early stage - white spots

Minerals leach from enamel leaving matte white patches. Often no pain. This stage can be remineralised with fluoride and diet changes.

Cavity in enamel or dentine

When acid breaks through enamel into dentine, food traps and sensitivity appear. We restore comfortably with tooth-coloured fillings.

Pulp involvement

Deep decay can inflame the nerve, causing lingering pain. Treatment may involve root canal therapy or a protective crown.

Common signs

  • Sensitivity to cold, heat or sweets
  • Food catching between teeth
  • Visible brown or black spots
  • Bad breath or an unpleasant taste

Who is at higher risk

  • Frequent snacking on sugary or acidic foods or drinks
  • Not brushing and flossing daily
  • Dry mouth - medications or mouth-breathing
  • Braces, dentures or deep grooves that trap plaque
  • Children and teens with erupting molars

How to prevent cavities - and stop early ones

Daily home care

Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and floss once a day. Spit - do not rinse - so fluoride stays on your teeth.

Smart diet

Keep sugary foods to mealtimes and swap sticky snacks for cheese, nuts or vegetables. Limit acidic drinks between meals.

In-clinic prevention

Topical fluoride and tailored advice. Deep grooves can be protected with fissure sealants - ideal for kids and teens.

Gentle, modern treatment options

Tooth-coloured fillings

Blend with your natural teeth and seal out bacteria. We remove only the softened tooth and keep as much healthy enamel as possible.

Root canal therapy

If decay reaches the nerve, root canal relieves pain and saves the tooth. A crown may be added for strength on back teeth.

Emergency care

Severe toothache or a broken tooth - same-day help is available.
